All About Nina

Nina (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a disaster. A hot disaster, really. A stand-up comedian who lives in New York undermining his terrible love life to laugh and drown his darkest sorrows in as much drink as she can handle, Nina needs to piece together her shit. That’s why he decides to get up and move to Los Angeles, where the change of scenery should clear his mind. Bonus: TV executives are actively exploring new female cartoons for a one-hour comedy special. It is exactly the opportunity that defines the career you desperately need. All about Eva Vives’ Nina is the story of how this worried and extremely funny woman struggles to make others laugh through her pain.

As the Madrilenian filmmaker showed with Join the Club, she has a gift for observational humor with a feminist inclination. And his film debut proves he’s a talent to watch. Child more obvious than the king of comedy, this version of the comedy stand is dark and funny and disrespectful in every way. To balance Nina’s bitter humor, Vives surrounds Winstead with two key players who are decidedly sweeter, more “LA”: there is the bold and charming Rafe (Common) who tries to seduce and treat her well, and Lake (Kate Castillo), a woman who lets her crash in the spacious house she shares with her partner Paula (Clea DuVall). Most recently known for playing kickass women (see: Ingobernable), Lake gives Del Castillo the opportunity to take advantage of his more comical side. Wearing loose dresses and chunky jewelry, Lake is the kind of spirit-free new generation woman who says things like, “The truth will set you free” and “I am water-based, so I need trees around me” (“I “Based on whiskey,” Nina jokingly says.)

It could be said that it is one of the best films of the Tribeca Film Festival this year. All About Nina is also a powerful story about a broken young girl who finds solace in humor and alcohol that will undoubtedly resonate in the current # MeToo movement (which in itself is quite revealing, considering that Vives has been working on the script for years).

Nina Geld’s passion and talent have made her a rising star on the comedy scene, but she is an emotional disaster offstage. When a new professional opportunity coincides with a romantic opportunity, she is forced to face her own deeply problematic past.
